If a Spanish person tells you where to eat the best tapas, there is no need to ask for more. Trust him.
That trust, in no way overrated, led us to ME Lounge. Run – as it should be – by super friendly, authentic Spanish people who know their stuff.
The modern and white interior was perfect for a chilled out evening, giving a kind-of-summer feeling even in the end of November (is it winter yet?). We sat outside, as they had tables as well as a chill lounge area there to enjoy the wide view over Spinola Bay.
We had the chance to choose from a wide range of delicacies: Spanish, Maltese and international beverages, Cocktails, salads, a few dishes and – what we especially came for – tapas of which more than half were vegetarian!
As it’s usual for tapas, we chose our favourites and shared. Those were Patatas con salsa quesa (hand-cut fried potatoes with cheese sauce), Pintxo de tortilla (Spanish omelette on warm bread with gazpacho), Pintxo de queso (melted brie cheese on warm bread finished with caramelised onions), Rollo de berenjena (eggplant and cheese mousse rolls served on couscous and finished with a touch of honey) and Champinones rellenos (mushrooms stuffed with garlic, walnuts and creamy cheese sauce served with couscous).
Being full of expectations, we had to control ourselves when the first few plates arrived to not dash off on it like hungry wolves, although waiting time was really not long at all. The tapas were arranged nicely on the plates with occasionally some rucola and balsamic vinegar on the sides.
The melted brie cheese on bread with caramelised onions were our favourites. The combination was more than delicious, even topped with some honey, and we ordered another round one of them.
The eggplant and cheese mousse rolls will also definitely be one of my orders again next time! Soft cheese coated by one of my favourite vegetables ever. Yummy.
One friend had a typical Spanish drink, which reminded her of her time in Malaga: Tinto de verano, consisting of red wine, sprite and normally slices of lemon, which she sadly missed this time. But it didn’t bother her that much, as the wine glass she got was filled to the top and the mix was great anyway.
ME Lounge is a place to recommend, let alone the moderate prices but Spanish tapas cooked by Spanish people – One can’t go wrong with this.
