Winter is well and truly upon us, which means that we must once again ask ourselves the age-old question: should we choose warmth and comfort over looking stylish?
In reality, this is not a choice we need to make. Winter clothes afford us to look chic even when it’s freezing. All we need to know is what to wear and, more importantly, how to wear it.
Layers Are King
Layering is an artform and a science, and when done right, it will ensure you are both comfortable and stylish. Although in Malta it rarely gets very cold, starting with good undergarments is essential to retain warmth. So put on those vests, warm socks or thermal tights. Then move on to layer your clothes starting from shirts, blouses or T-shirts before donning cardigans, sweaters, or dresses. Finish off with a coat or jacket. The best part of this is that you can take layers off as you go about your day – essential if you leave the house very early in the morning, if you work in a heated office, or even if you’re going shopping in airconditioned malls.
Know Your Clothes
All too often, people don’t invest in the right type of clothing: V-necks are cool, sure, but they don’t keep you warm like turtlenecks do. When shopping for your winter wardrobe, it’s good to buy with your head as well as with your heart. Jeans don’t keep you warm, so you will need tights (or long johns – gasp!) underneath; skirts don’t offer the kind of warmth you need, so buy long socks or thermal tights, too; cardigans, V-necks and crewnecks are great, but you’ll need to keep your neck warm somehow.
Use Accessories Wisely
Keep your head warm with a beautiful hat, stave the cold off with a chunky scarf, keep your fingers toasty with cashmere-lined leather gloves, and carry an extra cardigan in your oversized handbag. In other words, accessories should be both stylish and functional at this time of year!
Buy The Essentials
• Turtlenecks are stylish and keep your neck warm. Invest in them.
• Mittens help keep your hands warm and are easier to put on and take off.
• Chunky knitwear adds a cool edge to your layering.
• Woolen berets retain heat and add a touch of Parisian glamour to your look.
• Boots hide unsightly – but thick and warm – socks.
• Thermal tights can be worn under jeans, skirts and dresses.
